GS1 Canada Launches Education Centre -- Educational Offerings Provided by Industry Experts Equip Organizations with the Tools and Techniques to Increase Their Supply Chain Efficiency --
TORONTO, ON, October 4, 2005 - GS1 Canada, Canada’s experts in collaborative commerce and global standards, today announced the launch of its Education Centre with a wide portfolio of courses that provide information, tools and techniques to improve supply chain business processes. To address the ever-increasing demand for standards-based, supply chain education throughout organizations, the GS1 Canada Education Centre curriculum is designed to serve an expansive and diverse constituency of members of all sizes, in locations across the country.

Supply Chain Education Leaders Provide Tools to Enhance Business Processes Since its inception, GS1 Canada has been a provider of educational programs to help new members comprehend and integrate product identification standards. The curriculum has gradually expanded, with the addition of programs that impart knowledge on a diversity of standards-related and technical topics. By year-end, it is anticipated that GS1 Canada’s Education Centre will serve in excess of 1,000 attendees online and in classrooms, augmenting their organization’s core compentencies and enabling them to better compete. GS1 Canada is continuously augmenting educational offerings to ensure attendees have the tools and knowledge base to compete in the domestic and global marketplace.
Flexible Educational Formats To meet the needs of attendees, three streams of educational opportunities are offered from basic to advanced levels. The offerings include:
- LEARN, is a bilingual series of self-directed, interactive Flash courses, offered to members only, that provide a comprehensive overview of how GS1 standards are implemented in all areas of the supply chain – from manufacturer to distribution centre to supermarket. Upon successful completion of the LEARN courses, an internationally-recognized certificate will be issued.
- INTERACT webinars are instructor-led teleconferences conducted over the phone and simulcast over the Internet, offered on a regular basis to members only. Topics include basic bar coding, shipping container coding options, correctly allocating GTIN numbers to products prior to reaching retail stores and introduction to radio frequency identification (RFID) and the Electronic Product Code (EPC).
- FOCUS workshops are in-class sessions offered to both GS1 Canada members and non-members, dealing with more advanced supply chain applications such as XML for Business Messaging or engaging the Collaborative Planning Forecasting and Replenishment (CPFR®) business tool.
