GS1 Canada Partners with En-Vision America to bring Canada’s only Portable Talking Bar Code Reader to the Visually Impaired

TORONTO, ON, November 21, 2007 – GS1 Canada, Canada’s expert in collaborative commerce and global standards, is pleased to assist the visually impaired in Canada gain greater independence through innovative technology. GS1 Canada has partnered with En-Vision America and the Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB) to bring i.d. mate OMNI®, the only portable talking bar code reader available in Canada, to the visually impaired.

As a result of this partnership, product data loaded in ECCnet Registry, Canada’s national product registry, and published to En-Vision America, will be automatically loaded into the i.d. mate OMNI® database. The i.d. mate OMNI® will enable people living with vision loss to identify consumer packaged goods at the store and at home. Details will include nutritional information, ingredients, instructions, package size, and other package and product details.

“En-Vision America has introduced an innovative piece of technology that will revolutionize daily life and provide dramatic benefits for the visually impaired in Canada,” said Paul Osland, vice president, Business Development, GS1 Canada. “Over 100 vendors have granted access to En-Vision America, including Nestlé Canada Inc. and Blistex (Canada) Ltd. who have been the forerunners in allowing En-Vision America to access their product catalogues. In so doing, they are helping to improve the quality of life for the visually impaired in Canada.”

i.d. mate OMNI® is En-Vision America’s portable "all-in-one" talking bar code scanner, allowing an individual to identify items using the product's bar code. A database of over one million North American bar codes and descriptions allow the user to quickly and accurately identify the product and acquire the information needed about the item both in-store when purchasing, as well as in the home during food preparation and consumption.

The visually impaired face difficult challenges and, as technology advances, we should help to ensure that they are provided with the same opportunities as those who are sighted. GS1 Canada will continue its role to lead and encourage other major manufacturers and vendors in Canada to grant En-Vision America access to their product catalogues in ECCnet Registry.
