GS1 Canada Commends the Harper Government for Prioritizing Food, Product and Consumer Safety

TORONTO, ON, May 23, 2008- GS1 Canada, Canada’s leading neutral, not-for-profit association in the development of global standards for electronic business and supply chain processes, is pleased to note Wednesday’s announcement by Prime Minister Stephen Harper on the modernization of Canada’s food labeling guidelines.

“GS1 Canada commends Prime Minister Harper for making consumer protection and safety a top priority for his government,” commented N. Arthur Smith, President and CEO of GS1 Canada.  “This is an area that deserves a dedicated focus in order to ensure that Canadians have the strongest systems and modern processes in place to protect them and their families.”

The government’s proposed new guidelines, which will enhance the clarity and consistency of information on products in Canada’s food supply chain, will enable Canadians to make more informed choices about the products they are purchasing. By facilitating adoption of supply chain processes based on global standards, GS1 Canada is doing its part to enhance the clarity of information and visibility of products within the supply chain for the benefit of Canadian businesses and consumers alike.

As part of our commitment, GS1 Canada is collaborating with Dietitians of Canada on a proposal to the Federal Government to establish one national, easily accessible database of accurate nutrition information for foods sold in Canada.  GS1 Canada and the Dietitians of Canada look forward to working with the Government of Canada on this important initiative which will further enable the food industry to support consumer healthy living objectives, enhance the capacity of healthcare providers to develop effective health and wellness programs, and empower the public to make informed food choices.
