GS1 Canada applauds Alberta Government’s Progressive Livestock Strategy as a catalyst for Canadian competitiveness

TORONTO, ON, June 5,  2008 - GS1 Canada, Canada’s leading neutral, not-for-profit association in the development of global standards for electronic business and supply chain processes, applauds today’s announcement by George Groeneveld, Minister of Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development, on Alberta’s new strategy to stabilize and strengthen Alberta’s livestock industry for the future.

“GS1 Canada commends the Alberta government for taking a leadership role in making food traceability a priority,” commented N. Arthur Smith, President and CEO of GS1 Canada.  “This initiative will significantly enhance consumer product safety, while securing the Agriculture Community’s competitive position in Canada and globally.”

By facilitating adoption of supply chain processes based on global standards, GS1 Canada is doing its part to enhance Canada’s agriculture value chain through global standards, creating visibility of products within the supply chain for the benefit of Canadian businesses and consumers.

As part of this commitment, and in response to the urgency to build a national capacity for traceability of the Canadian food supply, GS1 Canada was invited by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada to facilitate the formation of Can-Trace in 2003, a national collaboration between all points along the agriculture and agri-food supply chain to produce a national traceability standard for all food products sold in Canada.
