United Grocers Inc. Engages GS1 Canada’s ECCnet Registry to Synchronize its Private Label Product Information
-- Synchronized Product Information Improves Speed-to-Market and Data Accuracy --

TORONTO, ON, July 10, 2006 – United Grocers Inc. (U.G.I.), an association of Canadian grocery retailers, today announced it has selected to synchronize product data with ECCnet Registry, Canada’s national product registry.  Utilizing ECCnet Registry for their new private label product line, Simply Kids, U.G.I. will improve data accuracy and increase speed-to-market for their products across the supply chain.  U.G.I. is among several other major Canadian grocery retailers, including Loblaw Companies Ltd., Sobeys Inc. and Shoppers Drug Mart Corporation that employ data synchronization services through ECCnet Registry.

“Rather than using a paper-based, manual system to list a product, we can streamline dissemination to our vendor community through ECCnet Registry, ensuring that information is accurate across the supply chain.  This also allows for greater speed-to-market for products, a key component for a successful product launch,” said Michael Marinangeli, President, U.G.I.

“ECCnet Registry is a flexible data synchronization solution which allows a user of any scale to customize for its specific business needs,” said Art Smith, CEO of GS1 Canada.  “This tool will meet U.G.I.’s immediate business objectives and bring them to a new level of business efficiency and effectiveness within the supply chain.”

Data synchronization – the process of sending, receiving, and updating data between multiple systems – through ECCnet Registry ensures that all partners in the supply chain have access to accurate information that support a wide range of business processes, improving the efficiency of the supply chain.

Using GS1 Canada’s ECCnet Registry, companies register product and location information, which is then validated to ensure completeness and compliance to industry-accepted standards.  The cleansed data is then synchronized and made available to trading partners, ensuring that they are exchanging accurate, up-to-date, standards-compliant data.  ECCnet Registry supports over 2,200 vendors and more than 40 major retailers and distributors across a diverse base of industry sectors, including grocery, pharmacy, and foodservice.

Data synchronization across the supply chain reduces costs due to information errors, resulting in greater efficiency in key business processes, including:
