New Appointment to GS1 Canada’s
Carenet Healthcare Board Executive Committee

May 13, 2010

Toronto, ON – GS1 Canada is pleased to announce the appointment of Susan Smith, General Manager, Mohawk Supply Chain Services (MSCS) to the GS1 Canada Carenet Healthcare Sector Board Executive Committee. This Committee oversees the operational and strategic direction of the GS1 Canada Carenet Healthcare Sector Board.

“Ms. Smith brings to her role on the Executive Committee a wealth of experience in the healthcare sector, including profound insight into supply chain and logistics planning as well as a clinical perspective on patient safety,” said N. Arthur Smith, President and CEO, GS1 Canada. “Her contribution to the Committee will further foster the culture of innovation and leadership needed to advance supply chain standards adoption across Canada’s healthcare system; supporting improved cost efficiency and enhanced patient safety.”

Through its leadership, the Carenet Healthcare Sector Board Executive Committee proactively identifies opportunities to address supply chain inefficiencies in the healthcare sector. This direction enables the Carenet Healthcare Sector Board to support the healthcare industry through the adoption of globally-recognized GS1 standards to ultimately ensure that Canada’s healthcare trading partners are able to operate efficiently in an increasingly e-driven global supply chain.

“The work of this Executive Committee is significant. The adoption of a global system of supply chain standards is central to moving Canada’s healthcare system into the 21st century, by streamlining processes and reducing medical errors,” stated Ms. Smith. “That’s the reason why I became involved with the Carenet strategy right from the start; because of my strong belief in the benefits to patient safety. I look forward to collaborating with my colleagues to achieve this goal, nationally.”

In her current role, Ms. Smith is responsible for the overall operational and strategic management of Mohawk Supply Chain Services, which provides sourcing, contract management, warehousing and logistics for 15 member hospitals in south central Ontario. These members spend more than $2 billion annually to provide comprehensive and essential healthcare services and incorporate leading practices to achieve standardization.

A current Carenet Healthcare Sector Board member, Ms. Smith is a strong advocate for GS1 standards in healthcare. Her appointment to the Executive Committee further enhances the dynamic group of committee members who are represented across the healthcare spectrum.
