Pharmaceutical manufacturers, become Rx2 Certified!

The Canadian and U.S. healthcare industries are transitioning to the use of the GS1 Global Trade Item Numbers (GTINs) for product identification by the sunrise date of December 31, 2012. This will enable the healthcare system to implement bar code scanning to enhance patient safety, maximize operational efficiencies, and drive cost savings.

The pharmacy sector in Canada has reached critical mass adoption of the GTIN, as virtually all pharmaceutical product packaging is marked with a GS1 bar code. The sector is now focused on advancing automation within the sector and driving data integrity through the adoption of ECCnet Registry, Canada’s national product registry.

To achieve these advances, GS1 Canada’s Healthcare Pharmacy Sector Board – supported by Canada’s leading pharmacy retailers, hospital pharmacies, group purchasing organizations and distributors – requires manufacturers to complete the loading of all their pharmaceutical (prescription and over-the-counter) product information into ECCnet Registry and obtain Rx2 Certification. Manufacturers who successfully load all required pharmacy product data will be Rx2 Certified. Becoming Rx2 certified enables a manufacturer to share their pharmaceutical product data with their trading partners through data synchronization.

The pharmacy industry has identified a set of standardized pharmaceutical product attributes to ensure complete and accurate product identification, referred to as ‘Rx2 attributes’. These Rx2 attributes represent the most current set of pharmaceutical product data fields added to ECCnet Registry, as agreed to by industry.

By providing healthcare organizations and community pharmacies with accurate and up-to-date product data in a standardized format, pharmaceutical manufacturers can realize such benefits as:

With approximately 75% of pharmaceutical products entered into ECCnet Registry, many pharmaceutical manufacturers have already obtained Rx2 certification including Abbott Laboratories, AstraZeneca Canada, GlaxoSmithKline, Merck Canada, Johnson & Johnson, Pfizer Canada Inc., Hoffmann-La Roche and more.

If your organization has not yet attained Rx2 Certification for your prescription or over-the-counter pharmacy product data, or if you have any questions, please contact Stefanie Attard, Pharmacy Implementation Manager at Stefanie.Attard@gs1ca.org or Phil Garner, Pharmacy Implementation Manager at Phil.Garner@gs1ca.org.
