2005 Sunrise: A standard-based initiative to harmonize trade between North American and international retailers and manufacturers
In an effort to improve global commerce efficiency, the international e-commerce standards body which includes GS1 Canada, announced that effective January 1, 2005 all Canadian and U.S. companies be capable of scanning and processing EAN-8 and EAN-13 bar code symbols, in addition to 12-digit U.P.C. symbols, at point-of-sale.
With this standard, known as 2005 Sunrise, in place, products imported from Europe and elsewhere no longer require re-packaging or re-bar coding for the North American market.
As part of business relationships, suppliers are responsible for informing their retailer trading partners concerning the length of the bar codes with which their products are labeled. Please contact your retailers individually to confirm that they are 2005 Sunrise compliant and that they are able to scan and process EAN.UCC-13 digit barcodes at their points of sale.
The following major Canadian retailers have informed their vendors that they can accept 13-digit bar codes (in addition to 12-digit U.P.C.s) at all points-of-sale, in accordance with 2005 Sunrise:
This capability demonstrates commitment to global electronic commerce, and allows for greater efficiencies and opportunities for suppliers and customers.
