GS1 Connect Conference highlights value of clean data

From June 5-7, a record number of nearly 1,400 supply chain management professionals gathered in Las Vegas, Nevada for GS1 Connect 2012, to learn how global GS1 standards enhance the management, exchange and access of product information across the supply chain.

Hosted by GS1 US, GS1 Connect 2012 was held under the theme “Business Moving Forward”. The world-class conference demonstrated how GS1 standards help companies manage their products, develop business process insights, and better meet their customers’ needs with actionable information.

The conference incorporated several dynamic presentations including a keynote by Biz Stone, Co-Founder of Twitter, and an impressive industry panel led by Darden Restaurants, eBay, McKesson Specialty Health and Peapod.com. This unique combination of industry leaders covered critical issues that reinforce a collaborative environment to drive value for small and large businesses alike.

GS1 Connect Conference Director Terry Erman stated that the conference enabled attendees to identify and understand the vast potential of industry collaboration.

"GS1 Connect brings together people and solutions that support different parts of the supply chain and connects them to a bigger picture of what is capable through an integrated approach to solving supply chain problems," said Erman. "They get to hear from end-users like themselves, who use barcodes, e-commerce, data synchronization, and RFID to gain efficiency and visibility in their supply chain operations. That really seems to resonate with our audiences."

Conference participants – comprised of business representatives from around the world, had the opportunity to attend more than 60 user-driven workshops. These sessions focused on industry-specific topics relevant to sectors such as apparel, consumer packaged goods, foodservice, fresh foods, general merchandise, hardlines, and healthcare. As noted by attendees, a prominent theme that consistently emerged from the workshops was the value of data integrity.

Data integrity enables successful data synchronization, allowing trading partners to share trusted, accurate product information that is complete, and up-to-date. It provides an industry approved business solution, to enhance supply chain processes and trading partner relationships. Data Integrity is a central component of global GS1 standards and provides the following benefits:

  • Enables secure e-commerce transactions
  • Moves products more efficiently across the supply chain
  • Provides a single source of truth for accurate and timely data
  • Reduces costs and administrative labour
  • Reduces opportunity for data errors

GS1 Connect has been held annually since 2000. The conference is driven by a planning committee that includes representatives from several major retailers and suppliers. For more information, visit http://uconnect.gs1us.org.
