GS1 Canada, as the industry-led, not-for-profit organization in Canada with the authority to distribute and maintain the bar code system of company and product information, works to serve and support your business-to-business e-commerce needs.



GS1 Canada was created by industry, for industry to ensure that Canadian business remain globally competitive by conforming to the EAN.UCC system of product identification and e-commerce communication.

GS1 Canada, the national standards organization for product and location identification and related e-commerce communication was awarded $2.5 million in funding from CANARIE Inc. to accelerate the development and expansion of ECCnet, Canada’s National Product Registry.

CANARIE Inc., Canada’s advanced Internet development organization, is an industry-led, not-for-profit corporation with primary funding from Industry Canada. Its mission is to accelerate the development and use of Canada’s advanced Internet by facilitating the widespread adoption of faster, more affordable networks and by stimulating the development of next generation products, applications and services.

The ECCnet Registry is a virtual country catalogue of products that guarantees data integrity of product information exchanged by trading partners domestically and internationally. The ECCnet Registry was launched in 2000 to dramatically reduce the amount of errors in product listing forms and common business documents and to synchronize data among trading partners in the grocery, pharmaceutical and foodservice sectors.

The goal of the CANARIE Inc. E-Business Funding Program is to help Canadian industry become competitive through assisting organizations to develop and deploy e-business strategies and applications, particularly strategies and applications that relate to such business models as supply chain management, among others.

The CANARIE Inc. funding assists GS1 Canada to accelerate the next phase of the registry and achieve the critical mass to make the registry a viable solution for all Canadian business regardless of size or structure. In particular, this phase of development has enabled the ECCnet Registry to extend its reach to small and medium enterprises and level the playing field with their larger competitors in the supply chain.
