GS1 Canada and CareNET Services Inc. Announce Strategic Alliance:
Innovative Partnership to Build Safer Healthcare for Canadian Patients

TORONTO, Ontario, October 17, 2007 – GS1 Canada and CareNET Services Inc. (CareNET) today formally announced their strategic alliance to further the adoption of global supply chain and electronic commerce (e-commerce) standards and practices with the shared vision of directly improving patient safety and administrative efficiency within the Canadian healthcare community.

“Across Canada, healthcare institutions are constantly under pressure to manage the growing demand for a safe and efficient healthcare system. The potential value of supply chain management improvements in Ontario’s hospital sector alone has been estimated at more than $300 million – funding that can be reinvested into priority healthcare services,” explained Alicia Duval, vice president, Healthcare, GS1 Canada. “The partnership between GS1 Canada and CareNET marks an important step forward to help the Canadian healthcare sector achieve these results as well as a way to increase our ongoing efforts to strengthen patient safety across the country.”

“We’re very excited about the opportunity for GS1 Canada and CareNET to increase patient safety efforts, improve business processes and reduce costs throughout the healthcare supply chain by utilizing proven, global standards combined with supply chain best practices,” added Patrick Smith, co-chair, CareNET and Manager, Regional Purchasing, Hamilton Health Sciences. “It has been demonstrated over and over that Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) systems simplify the exchange of product information and documents shared between healthcare facilities and their suppliers, resulting in the superior use of scarce healthcare resources.”

CareNET is a not-for-profit volunteer standards association of Canadian healthcare providers (hospitals) and suppliers facilitating the development of Canadian e-commerce guidelines throughout the healthcare supply chain. GS1 Canada is a member organization of GS1, the largest e-commerce standards organization in the world dedicated to the design and implementation of global standards and solutions in order to improve supply chain management and e-commerce.

The strategic alliance between GS1 Canada and CareNET signals an important linkage between healthcare supply chain management and global supply chain standards. It captures the synergies of CareNET’s broad-based healthcare industry knowledge (with its membership of 437 hospitals and 97 suppliers across Canada), and GS1 Canada’s expertise in global supply chain and collaborative commerce standards development, maintenance and implementation. This not only helps healthcare administrators, it provides tangible results for Canadian patients through the reduction of medical errors.

“Through GS1 Canada and CareNET working together, future e-commerce standards will comply with global standards, thereby paving the way for future cost reductions in the healthcare supply chain and greater coordination among healthcare partners,” stated Robert West, co-chair, CareNET and executive vice president, Medical Mart Suppliers Limited.
