EAN International becomes GS1

November 1, 2004 In 2005, EAN International will become GS1, a new name that signifies global standards and systems. This name change unifies and aligns EAN and all its Member Organizations to one global vision - leading the design and implementation of global electronic commerce standards to improve the supply and demand chain. As a Member Organization of GS1, the Electronic Commerce Council of Canada will become GS1 Canada later in 2005.

ECCC is your voice in GS1, the largest standards organization in the world. GS1 represents the interests of its Member Organizations and their members with official bodies such as the United Nations and international associations such as the International Association for Standardization (ISO).

GS1 and its operations in over 101 countries have exclusive authorization to manage existing electronic commerce standards including bar coding, EDI and XML. GS1's unified global vision also empowers the organization to lead standards development in emerging electronic initiatives to improve the supply chain, including:

  • EPC - Electronic Product Code
  • GDSN - Global Data Synchronization
  • Traceability - Tracking and tracing product through the supply chain

ECCC and Canadian industry are well-positioned at the forefront of these emerging initiatives thanks to the support of Canadian businesses and ECCC's leadership in initiatives like ECCnet Canada's National Product Registry and Can-Trace.
