GS1 Canada Receives Top Honours for Supply Chain Excellence

Toronto, ON, June 23, 2008 – GS1 Canada, Canada’s leading neutral, not-for-profit association in the development of global standards for electronic business and supply chain processes, has been awarded top honours for Supply Chain Excellence. The award was presented at the Voluntary Interindustry Commerce Solutions (VICS) Association/UConnect Annual Conference in Dallas, Texas on June 11, 2008.

Judges awarded GS1 Canada for progress facilitating electronic supply chain management in the pharmaceutical industry. The creation and use of non-proprietary, global standards and processes enable data synchronization through ECCnet Registry, Canada’s national product registry. This registry ensures that all business partners in the supply chain have access to accurate information to support business processes, expand trade and traceability of products and improve the efficiency of the supply chain. Expanding beyond front store products, ECCnet Registry now includes more than 10,000 over the counter, 11,000 prescription and 500 behind the counter products.

“Recognition in this category is particularly gratifying. We are very proud of our contribution to facilitate the evolution of Canadian pharmaceutical businesses’ capabilities and processes,” said N. Arthur Smith, President and CEO, GS1 Canada. “Standards have the potential to revolutionize the healthcare system; improving the safety, efficiency and sustainability of healthcare operations.”

The VICS Collaborative Commerce Achievement Awards rank among the most prestigious in retailing, consumer goods, and related industries. The awards honour organizations whose strategic thinking, leadership, and implementation of GS1 global standards and VICS collaborative commerce guidelines have resulted in more effective supply chain practices and partnerships. Winners were decided by the VICS Board of Directors, composed of industry executives and leaders.

“The winners of this year’s awards have shown how vital collaboration is in our industries,” said Joe Andraski, president and CEO of VICS. “The VICS Board of Directors applauds GS1 Canada for its continued leadership in facilitating solutions to improve supply chain efficiencies across multiple sectors.”

GS1 Canada was also selected as a finalist in the Supply Chain Excellence category for the creation of Item Centre: The next generation of ECCnet Registry (Item Centre). The Item Centre removes all paper from the listing process and provides efficiencies throughout the supply chain, enabling trading partners to manage all product listing data (core and proprietary), and process it in a single, workflow-based portal. The organization was also nominated as a finalist in this category in 2007.

“This award is a tribute not only to GS1 Canada but also to the pharmacy industry, who was essential to the success of this initiative, and whose leadership has set an example for other organizations to follow suit,” added Smith.
