Continued Growth of Small Business Critical to Canadian Economy

Toronto, ON October 24, 2008 - Canada’s small businesses are key contributors to innovation, investment and job creation across the country.  In recognition of this important contribution to our country’s prosperity, GS1 Canada would like to commend Canada’s small business entrepreneurs during this week’s Small Business Week.

“In this increasingly challenging global economic period, Canada’s small businesses – which make up 98% of Canadian businesses - are vital contributors to Canada’s continued productivity and success,” said N. Arthur Smith, President and CEO, GS1 Canada.  “Given our current economic climate it is more essential than ever that Canadian business have access to the tools and support necessary to remain competitive and grow.”

As the world migrates to electronic business processes, GS1 Canada is proud to support small businesses in Canada by facilitating their adoption of global standards for supply chains and trade, which help businesses to save money, improve productivity, and comply with trade guidelines and regulations, enabling them to remain competitive both within Canada and in international markets.

“Small businesses are the backbone of the Canadian economy,” stated Smith.  “With the support of the Ontario Government, GS1 Canada created the GS1 Knowledge Centre to assist this business community in advancing its competitiveness through electronic commerce processes. We look forward to continuing to support Canada’s small business entrepreneurs as they forge new markets and business opportunities, and to facilitating their continued competitiveness and success both at home and abroad.”

GS1 Canada is a neutral, not-for-profit organization that promotes and maintains global standards for the identification of goods, locations and related e-commerce communication, and provides education and awareness of these global standards. Learn more at www.gs1ca.org.
