Healthcare sector driving GS1 standards implementation

The healthcare industry is at a critical crossroads. Budgets are tighter, while expectations are higher. Organizations are increasingly looking towards proven and sustainable supply chain and clinical solutions to drive cost savings, while providing the highest quality of patient care.

Leading the way in enabling an optimal healthcare delivery system, Ontario Shared Services Organizations – Champlain Health Supply Services (CHSS) and Mohawk Supply Chain Services (Mohawk); as well as HealthPRO, Canada’s largest Group Purchasing Organization, recently announced their adoption of ECCnet Registry, Canada’s national product registry, for the exchange of product information with trading partners.

ECCnet Registry maximizes efficiencies by providing standardized, accurate and perpetually cleansed product information. Managed by GS1 Canada, the registry establishes a single point of access to medical device, grocery, pharmacy and foodservice data. The benefits of sharing standardized data through a centralized registry such as ECCnet Registry are felt along the healthcare supply chain. These include:

ECCnet Registry will also serve as a significant resource for the Canadian healthcare community as it transitions to GS1 Global Trade Item Numbers (GTINs – the numbers at the bottom of a bar code) for product identification by the industry-accepted sunrise date of December 31, 2012.
