FIC EU Regulation 1169/2011:

What You Need to Know

FIC EU Regulation 1169/2011 is a new European Union directive on the provision of food information to consumers that came into effect on December 13, 2014. Aimed at standardizing food labeling and providing greater clarity to consumers on ingredients, nutrition and allergens, the regulation applies to food business operations with trading partners in the EU, at all stages of the food chain where their activities concern the provision of food information.
Online retailers selling to the EU must ensure that the information they provide conforms to the regulation and is identical to the product information provided on the manufacturers’ physical packaging.
Compliance with the new legislation will ensure product information is consistent throughout the supply chain at every consumer touch-point, both in-store and online.
Some of the changes to the existing EU legislation on food labeling include:

  • Mandatory nutrition information on processed foods
  • Mandatory origin labeling of unprocessed meat from pigs, sheep, goats and poultry
  • Highlighting allergens e.g. peanuts or milk in the list of ingredients
  • Better legibility i.e. minimum size of text
  • Requirements on information on allergens also cover non pre-packed foods including those sold in restaurants and cafés

Please note, those who fail to comply by the new regulation will be unable to sell their products in-store, in restaurants or online within the EU.

Who Does EU Regulation 1169/2011 Affect?

The new regulation affects those selling pre-packed food and drink to the EU. The regulation centers on the information provided to customers at the point-of-sale, in particular, allergen and nutritional information for products sold in the EU, including:

  • Food manufacturers
  • Food retailers
  • Multi-channel retailers
  • Catering organizations
  • Food service
  • Food distributors
  • Upstream suppliers
